Endobronchial valve |

Possible position of EBV |
Endobronchial valve placement is a safe procedure, with significant short-term improvements in functional status, quality of life and relief of dyspnea in selected patients with emphysema. By placing these one way endobronchial valves (EBV) bronchoscopically into the most emphysematous lung segments, air is prevented from entering into the isolated segments, but distal bronchial secretions are allowed to escape. The result is induced atelectasis of the most emphysematous segments and redirection of air flow to the least emphysematous lung.
An ideal valve should have the following characteristics:
- Effective in achieving and sustaining lung volume reduction
- Reproducible results
- Deployable using a flexible bronchoscope
- No device migration
- Bronchial secretion should be allowed to escape
- Does not interfere with future surgery ¡V LVRS or transplantation
